Retaining Walls

Structural retaining walls engineered for slope stabilization and built with heavy-duty drainage integration. 3V constructs block retaining walls and terraced garden walls that hold back Utah soils and snow loads without leaning, bowing, or failing. Every wall is engineered for the load behind it and drained to prevent hydrostatic pressure.

    Engineered to Hold

A retaining wall is a structure, not a decoration, and it needs to be engineered for the soil, slope, and load behind it. 3V calculates wall height, setback, and reinforcement (including geogrid for taller walls) so the wall resists the lateral pressure of saturated soil and snow. Improperly built walls lean and fail within years; ours are designed to stand for the life of the property. In Northern Utah, walls also have to handle the lateral push of wet, frozen soil expanding against them, so we engineer for that real-world load rather than a best-case scenario.

    Drainage Behind Every Wall

Hydrostatic pressure from trapped water is the #1 cause of wall failure. Every 3V retaining wall integrates drainage, including gravel backfill, drainage fabric, and perforated pipe daylighted or tied to a proper outlet, so water never builds up behind the wall. This single detail separates walls that last decades from walls that bow and collapse after a wet winter. Without drainage, even a beautifully built wall will fail, because the soil behind it saturates and pushes with enormous force. We never skip it.

    Terraces & Garden Walls

Beyond structural walls, we build terraced garden walls that turn steep, unusable slopes into level, plantable space, increasing usable yard and visual interest. Lower walls for planters and seating integrate seamlessly with patios and landscapes. Our in-house excavation equipment makes slope work efficient and precise, controlling cost and timeline without rental delays. Terracing not only creates usable space, it also slows runoff and reduces erosion, which protects both the wall and the landscape around it.

    Built for Utah's Freeze-Thaw

Northern Utah's freeze-thaw cycles put enormous stress on retaining walls as the wet soil behind them expands and contracts. Our walls are engineered with proper setback, reinforcement, and, critically, drainage that relieves that pressure before it builds. Combined with a properly compacted base and quality block, this is what lets our walls stand straight through decades of Utah winters while poorly built walls lean, bow, and fail. We back every wall with the commercial standards we've applied to site work for 15+ years.
